Kayak Courses in South Canterbury
Learn to paddle whitewater with Peel Forest Outdoor Centre, a not-for-profit outdoor education trust based in Peel Forest, near Geraldine. We're about two hours' drive from Christchurch, on the doorstep of some of Canterbury's best Grade 2 rivers.
Our kayak courses are run by NZOIA Kayak 1 and Kayak 2 qualified instructors. We supply the kayak, paddle, helmet, wetsuit and buoyancy aid, so you don't need your own boat to get started.
Most people come to us for one of two reasons: to get their Grade 2 certificate for the Coast to Coast, or to learn how to stay safe around rivers.

Coast to Coast Grade 2 Kayak Certificate (4 days)
Get the Grade 2 Kayaking Skills Certificate you need for the Coast to Coast. Four days of pool, flat water and river coaching with NZOIA-qualified instructors. Small groups (1:4, or 1:6 with an assistant instructor). Kayak, gear and on-site accommodation included. Ages 16+. Runs October to April, $999 inc GST
River Safety and Rescue Training
We believe everyone should be equipped with basic river safety skills. Learn, upskill or get qualified to teach river safety and rescue. River rescue and safety training offered at different levels to suit students, workplaces, instructors.

We are registered as an Adventure Activity Operator (AAO) with WorkSafe NZ. The Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016 established a safety audit and registration process. The regulations aim to enhance professionalism and ensure consistent good practices across the sector.
